Motorola Skins

  • Mobile user interface customization.

Summary

At Motorola, I developed and managed production of user interface skin media and interface design for Linux-based MOTOMAGX and P2K mobile platforms. These innovative and flexible skins graced cell phones sold in the millions world-wide: ROKR E8, MOTOZINE ZN5, MOTO U9, RAZR2 V8, RAZR V3, and MOTOKRZR K1. I led a small team of designers and engineers, through development of 100+ skins for a variety of domestic and international carriers including: Vodafone, T-Mobile, and Orange.

Instrumental to the success of this process was the work I did in defining skinning structures (layout, rendering, color, and text properties). Coordinating efforts between software engineering teams in China, India, Russia, and Brazil, I was able to manage the development of scores of new UI widgets and screens to support a broad array of applications. Along with producing prototypes and spinning skins, my team was also integral in the iterative process of fixing UI bugs. Frequently, I devised workarounds to fix last-minute critical path blockers. My legacy includes process improvements such as mandatory use of industry standard source control (SVN) and streamlined media releases based on bug database output.
